Tinnitus FAQs

Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the head or ears when there is no external source for that sound. Tinnitus is not a disease but rather a symptom of an underlying issue.

It can vary from individual to individual, while it may not necessarily be cured for some people it can definitely be reduced. Some people will habituate to their symptoms, which means they notice it less over time.

There is a strong correlation between hearing loss and tinnitus. Our hearing can deteriorate because of ageing, noise trauma, infection, wax build up or certain medication.

It can be of any volume, intensity and pitch. People will describe it as ringing, hissing, buzzing, roaring, crickets, saccades etc.

Everyone will hear some form of tinnitus at some point in their life. For some it can last for 30 seconds and for some people it can last for a number of years. Most people will habituate to their tinnitus but this can depend on the reason for onset and can also vary from person to person based on their emotional response to the symptom.

  • Customised sound therapy – Effective at providing patients with control over tinnitus perceptual awareness, with the aim of inducing habituation. This treatment can be provided here at London Hearing.
  • Hearing protection – Loud noise exposure can exacerbate tinnitus. Ear defence products are available at the clinic.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – Good evidence that this reduces tinnitus related distress. Patients can learn to control their emotional reactions and thereby disassociate tinnitus from a negative behavioural response. This can be provided by Dr Laurence Mckenna at ENT at 150 Harley street London.
  • Lenire treatment – is a non-invasive medical device for tinnitus that combines customised sound therapy through headphones with mild electrical tongue stimulation. This inevitably retrains the brain and the neural pathway reducing the tinnitus symptoms. It has significantly improved symptoms for 80-90% of patients suffering with tinnitus in clinical trials. This treatment can be provided at London Hearing, for more information please contact [email protected]
