What is Tinnitus

Tinnitus is hearing sounds in the ear or in the head with the absence of an external sound source. Tinnitus sounds are often described as a whistling, ringing, buzzing, or hissing type. Tinnitus may affect one or both ears.

Normally the sounds are short-lived, but for some they can continue for many years causing a lot of distress to the sufferer.

Tinnitus can be caused by a number of different reasons such as exposure too very loud music, side effect of certain medication, a wax occluded ear, chronic ear infection, or a uncorrected hearing loss.

The most effective method of treatment of Tinnitus is to identify and eliminate the underlying cause. Unfortunately, in many cases the cause of Tinnitus cannot be identified and one of the following treatment methods may be of benefit:

Drug therapy, vitamin therapy, biofeedback, hypnosis, electrical stimulation, relaxation therapy, counseling, habituation therapies, and tinnitus maskers are among many forms of management available.

A treatment that is useful and successful for one person may not be appropriate for another.
